"Fans will no doubt still be thrilled with the third Saw, but will you (fans) even start to recognize that much of the film is merely going through the motions? Is it all getting a little too familiar? Does the third bring anything to the table that the first two didn't offer? Does it matter?"
Nothing compares to this movie. Saw III pretty much makes the first two look like a loosing game of Sorry. This movie is strictly for those who do not have weak stomachs. If you can tolerate scenes with 15 straight minutes of torture (no breaks), then you might be able to handle this movie, not to mention the other horrible things that happen. Saw III is just plain disgusting!
This is, in my opinion, probably the best written of all the Saw movies. This one goes into depth on what makes "Jigsaw" tick. The story centers around a few "games." One involving a father whose son's life was taken away by a drunk driver and has since been seeking vengeance. The other story centers around a doctor whose life has become nothing more than ruining relationships, and taking anti-depressants.
We all knew that "Jigsaw" was sick and in Saw II is sickness has worsened so the doctor plays a very important role in keeping him alive, with a little bit of motivation of course. While the angry father playing a "games," the doctor is tied to Jigsaw's heart monitor, and if Jigsaw flat lines, the contraption put around the doctors neck, will blow her face off.
With only two "games," it would seem a little slower than the last Saw movies, but you will be amazed at the results. The angry father keeps meeting up with people along the way, and similar to the last one, these people are not buddy-buddy. The witness who fled the scene of his son's death. The judge who only sentenced the drunk driver for six months. The driver himself, and yes, they are all placed into torture traps.
The father has to make a choice to kill them or offer forgiveness by saving their lives. The doctor herself stays busy by keeping Jigsaw alive and arguing with crazy Amanda, but finds her commitment to family being tested by Jigsaw. Both stories are equally intense and come together in what is said to be "one of the most repulsive and astonishing 15 minutes in the history of mainstream cinema."
I am pretty laid back when it comes to horror movies, so I am not very squeamish at all, but near end of some series of events featuring hogs, and brain surgery, I was feeling pretty sick. Following up one of the most vile scenes in a film with one of the most painful scenes in a movie tested my limits. Some of the scenes, I had to turn to my girlfriend (Gwen) who was also turned away, cutting off the circulation in my hands and arms.
I don't think there will be a Saw IV and all the horror fans out there are screaming for more, but at the same time, begs the question: How are they going to top the third? I think if they were to make a Saw IV, in an attempt to catch the audience, we may see levels of absurdity, and with a few people I have spoken with, that level has already been reached.
