Google's Android VS Apple's iPhone

In a recent poll, I asked what your favorite company was out of Apple, Microsoft, and Google. The majority of those who voted chose Apple and Google. Both companies were practically tied, Apple winning by just 1%. Not much of a difference, however it is clear that if given enough time and voters, we would probably see a significant increase in Google's favor. Both companies are very strong and I think we will see more of a competitive side from both companies, leaving Microsoft out of the picture. Why? Because Google is smart.

In a recent statement issued by Google, the words "We will outsell the iPhone," stuck in my head. The confidence really shows in their latest project - the Android. Apple's small and tightly controlled market has often come up in criticism of that company's overall strategy. I would agree that by locking itself to a small list of approved carriers, Apple may be hamstringing itself in sales. However, Apple has managed to sell some four million or more phones. Apple's goal is 10 million by the end of 2008. Will it happen? Only time will tell.

Google argues that Android's larger reach gives it the upper hand. The devices will be produced by a multitude of companies, and the company's apparent openness to put the phone on a larger list of carriers is also a plus. Like the iPhone, the Android will be open source, but Google claims that the restrictions placed on the SDK from Apple will not be placed on their SDK. The iPhone SDK has been downloaded over 100,000 times, but Android's SDK has been downloaded about 750,000 times according to Google's statistics.
