Napster Offers 6 Million DRM-Free Songs

Probably the biggest piece of digital music news to come out of CES 2008 was that Napster is planning to offer its complete catalog of more than 6 million tracks in the unprotected MP3 format. Sure, some of the other music distrubution services have a few DRM-Free protected music, but not 6 million songs. What does DRM-Free mean? That means you can do whatever you want to do with your music. Share it, copy it, burn it, play it, ect. You name it, do it.

Today, with the launch of version 4.5 of the software and store, this announcement takes effect today! All four major labels and thousands of indies are represented in the store, and every track will be available at the standard 99 cent price point. In addition, Napster's Web-based store, which is all that is required for MP3 purchases and downloads, is compatible with every operating system.

You may know that Napster does offer subscritpion-based services for $12.95 and $14.95 per month, and of course, these subscription plans will not include DRM-Free music. If that were the case, I'd be all over that! Until then, enjoy your tunes!
